Caring for a Person with Alzheimer’s Disease:
Your Easy-to-Use Guide from the National Institute of Aging

This guide is for people who care for family members or others with Alzheimer’s disease at home. Alzheimer’s is an illness that changes the brain. It causes people to lose the ability to remember, think, and use good judgment and to have trouble taking care of themselves. As the disease gets worse, they will need more help.

The information in this guide comes from other caregivers and from medical research, such as that funded by the National Institute on Aging. The NIA is part of the National Institutes of Health, the nation’s medical research agency. The NIA leads the federal effort to find the cause of and treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
